Impeaching George Bush and Dick Cheney MUST be accomplished
before their term of office ends, even if it takes place as late
as the morning of inauguration of the next administration.
Impeachment now will serve notice on future presidents and all
other officials that the actions of the present incumbents are
illegal and will not be tolerated. Failure to impeach them while
we can will not only establish their illegalities as precedent,
but will embolden further incremental encroachments on our
liberty. It must be made clear that we are a nation of laws and
that our presidents serve only so long as they respect our laws.
Our civil rights have never been so threatened.
They have put American citizens in prison without trial and
denied them the right of Habeas Corpus - the right to appear
before a judge to establish that there is evidence of a crime
committed by the prisoner. Our Bill of Rights was written
expressly to establish that such conduct is illegal. If there is
evidence of a crime committed by an American citizen or even a
president, put him on trial.
Bush and Chaney lied to us and to Congress in order to sell the
invasion of Iraq, a country that had not engaged in any acts of
war against us. In doing so they caused great damage to our long
tradition of refraining from attacking until attacked.
They have engaged in defiant illegal wire tapping in open and
notorious violation of laws that establish clear rules and
regulations for intelligence gathering.
They have gutted the
Constitutional protection against illegal unwarranted searches
and seizures. Right now, if you travel across a US border,
coming and going, any electronic device or documents in your
possession may be taken without explanation or cause and kept
indefinitely.
They engaged in outrageous violations of national security by
exposing the identity of an undercover CIA officer. When they
thought that lies under oath before a Grand Jury and to the FBI
by their operative (an aide to the vice-president, acting on the
v-p's orders) who had carried out those illegal orders would
prevent the truth from exposure, the president promised to
prosecute any offenders. But after the liar was convicted, the
president pardoned him from prison; the vice president continues
in office, unpunished.
The president, in signing Congressional Bills into law has made
illegal "signing statements" claiming that he may refuse to
uphold any law with which he disagrees, thus violating his oath
of office.
He has interfered with proper Congressional investigations into
the illegal political firings of local Federal Attorneys.
Most disgusting of all, he has
allowed and even encouraged, torture of the most despicable
kind, to be used on human beings. There is now evidence officials
in the FBI with knowledge of it repeatedly protested
to the White House that war crimes were being committed.
These actions MUST not be allowed to pass unchallenged to some
future demagogue to use against us. Unless stopped now, every
bit of history we know says that will happen. When it does, when
the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights no longer protect us
from unbridled exercise of power, we will no longer be the Land
of Liberty but just another banana republic, ruled at the whim
of whoever can grab the top office.
IMPEACH THEM NOW WHILE WE STILL CAN.
